Moving Mistakes You’ll Want to Avoid

Relocation is a stressful process without the added pressure of worrying about potential mistakes that can occur along the way. It’s best to find a way to simplify your move, and in doing so perhaps save you a few pretty pennies that can be better spent elsewhere.nnWe’ve put together a list of the most common moving mistakes for you to avoid, helping you to keep on track, stay organised, and lower your costs too.n

Not planning far enough in advance.

nYou need to start prepping for local moves at least 2-3 months in advance. International moves are a little more complicated, and may require prep roughly 6-12 months in advance.  Last minute moves often result in settling for disreputable movers, high moving costs, and forgetting important details.n

Not researching the area.

nDo some research on the area you’re planning to move to. Check out the crime rate, culture, things to do in the area, prospective jobs, and anything else that might be important. If you have children, it’s important to look into local schooling and make sure that you’re making the right decision for their future.nnn

Not planning the right time to move.

nDo yourself a favour and research the costs for moving at different times. School holidays, public holidays, and weekends are often quite expensive. Movers are also often busy at the beginning or end of the month, so you may find the cost of moving increases then too. Booking your move far enough in advance could be your saving grace, as you tend to incur additional charges for rushed moves as well.n

Considering that a self-move is cheaper than hiring a moving company.

nIf you decide to move yourself, make sure you understand all the costs involved. You have to hire a truck, procure insurance, fork out for fuel, pay for moving labour, buy moving materials, and then some. Take the time to calculate these costs and compare them to a professional moving service.n

Not getting multiple quotes.

nNever settle for the first quote. It’s best to compare at least 3 – 5 moving quotes before making your final decision. Obviously, extremely high costs are a no-no. Similarly, low ball quotes could indicate a lack of quality service and attention to detail. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!n

Not asking for a visual estimate.

nEmail or phone estimates simply aren’t good enough. Make sure to receive a solid visual estimate from your movers. They need to make you aware of any additional charges well in advance.nn
