Despite the heat, summer tends to be the most popular time of year to move. Moving takes its toll but in the warmer months, it can be even more strenuous. You may need to give some extra thought to keeping cool when moving in summer, thus making the process a breeze.

Plan Ahead

Moving in summer means you’ll be relocating in the busiest time of the year. You’ll need to start planning several months in advance if you want to have your pick of the most reliable moving companies in your area. Don’t rush to find movers last minute, you’ll either end up paying way too much or you’ll end up with a company that isn’t quite worth any payment at all.

Do thorough research

Don’t rush into things. It’s best to research at least 3 to 5 moving companies, asking pertinent questions, and comparing quotes. You don’t want to get ripped off but you certainly don’t want to skimp on costs if it means hiring untrustworthy movers.

Beat the Heat

Early morning moves are generally best when it comes to avoiding that oppressive midday heat. Wear lightweight clothing, stay hydrated, and take short breaks regularly. It’s too easy to forget to take care of yourself when you’re busy.

Move on the least busy days

Weekends are busy for movers, as are the first and last days of the month. Moving companies may offer discounted rates on weekdays, and they’ll be a little less hurried too. You may find that a mid-week move means that your movers will be in a better mood, thus paying better attention to your belongings.

If you don’t have a choice because of work commitments, make sure to book your weekend move well in advance. Last minute bookings are difficult enough. Getting a rushed weekend booking is even worse. Latecomers often need to pay higher prices, which is something you’ll want to avoid at all costs. Moving is pricey enough as it is.

Take Care of Your Belongings

Hot moving trucks aren’t the best environment for your more “sensitive” belongings. Candles, CDs and DVDs, vinyl records, and similar items don’t fare well in the heat, so you may wish to transport them in your own, air-conditioned vehicle instead.

If you plan ahead, a summer move doesn’t have to be an absolute nightmare. Take the time to do some serious thinking and you’re guaranteed to avoid adding unnecessary stress to your already full plate.
